James W. Reed, known affectionately as Jim, passed away on January 13, 2025, in Springfield, Tennessee. Born on December 6, 1949, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Jim led a life characterized by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to service.
Jim enjoyed a successful career in Plant Operation Management, contributing his expertise to several prominent companies including America Appliance Products, Delight Products, Ozburn Hessey, and Whirlpool. After retiring, Jim devoted the last decade of his life to Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, where he took on the role of Funeral Home Ambassador. His presence and support during numerous funerals earned him many friendships, particularly with the staff at the Robertson County Health Department, the local bank, and Conn at The Cleaners in Springfield.
As a proud U.S. Marine, Jim retired as an E-5 Sergeant, earning several commendations for his service, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, RVN Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm, and the Rifle Marksmanship Badge. A fellow Marine once described him as "One fine Marine," a testament to both his character and his service.
Educated at Trevecca Nazarene College, Jim graduated with pride and became a lifelong member of his church community. He was a longstanding member of Hillview Baptist Church before later moving to North Springfield Baptist Church. His dedication to his faith was evident in the way he shared the Gospel and how he volunteered his time to serve his church families.
Jim's warm personality was marked by his cheerful disposition, quick wit, and a kind heart. He was always willing to lend a hand to those in need, often spreading joy through small acts of kindness, such as handing out peppermints to those he encountered. His love for gospel music brought him great joy, often taking him to gospel singings where he could engage with others in uplifting song. Beyond his church activities, Jim had a passion for visiting residents at the nursing home and enjoyed quiet moments playing solitaire and watching old westerns on television.
Jim is survived by his beloved daughters, Marsha Reed and Sarah Reed, his brother Gary (Phylis) Reed, and his stepdaughters, Stacy Yandles and Susan (Billy) Tallant and their children. He also leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue through those who knew him well.
