Gloria Matheny

MATHENY, Gloria Jean- age 72 of Hendersonville, TN passed away peacefully in her home on March 20, 2013 after a long battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson 's disease. Her generous heart and caring personality proved to us that her beauty was more than just on the outside. She was an example to all of us on how to live a Christian life with style and grace. She was born in Mannington, WV on Feb. 25, 1941 to the late Harry C. and Doris Fluharty. This past June, she celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary with her high school sweetheart and loving husband John David Matheny. She is the mother of Scott Allen Matheny Susan and Michael Lee Matheny Leanne; grandchildren, Abby Alex, Anna and Ashley Matheny and Sarah Beth and Emily Hudson; brother, Gary Fluharty Brenda. After attending Fairmont State, she and John moved to TN where she taught PE and coached girls basketball at Donelson High School. For many years she also taught at Lakeside and Nannie Berry Elementary until deciding to sell real estate. For almost 30 years she helped many of us in Hendersonville find the perfect home. She was a member of the GFWC Hendersonville Women's Club and enjoyed volunteering for projects that gave back to the community. Gloria loved being with family and friends, spoiling her grandchildren, and traveling. The family would like to thank the supportive staff at Highpoint Hospice who provided comfort during last stages of Gloria's illness and also the compassionate and dignified care given by Ramona Dickinson. A Life Celebration Service will be held on Saturday at 11am in the chapel of Hendersonville Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Dye officiating. Burial will follow in Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
