Con gran pesar anunciamos el fallecimiento de Gabriel Barrera Sontay, un alma amable y gentil que dejó este mundo el 24 de mayo de 2023 a la temprana edad de 13 años. Gabriel nació el 22 de julio de 2009 en Springfield, donde pasó sus años de infancia construyendo Legos, viendo películas y jugando al fútbol. Se graduó de Innovation Academy Springfield Middle School, donde era conocido por su inteligencia y conducta tranquila.
Gabriel era un hijo amoroso para sus padres Gabriel y Margarita Reyna Barrera y un hermano cariñoso para Alma Denise Barrera Sontay y Marta Ester Barrera Sontay. Atesoraba el tiempo que pasaba con su familia, especialmente durante los días lluviosos cuando corrían y jugaban juntos. Gabriel era un buen oyente, siempre presente para quienes lo necesitaban.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gabriel Barrera Sontay, a kind and gentle soul who left this world on May 24th, 2023 at the young age of 13. Gabriel was born on July 22nd, 2009 in Springfield, where he spent his childhood years building legos, watching movies, and playing soccer. He was a graduate of Innovation Academy Springfield Middle School, where he was known for his intelligence and his quiet demeanor.
Gabriel was a loving son to his parents Gabriel and Margarita Reyna Barrera and a caring brother to Alma Denise Barrera Sontay and Marta Ester Barrera Sontay. He treasured his time spent with his family, especially during rainy days when they would run around and play together. Gabriel was a good listener, always present for those who needed him.
Gabriel's life will be celebrated with visitations on June 8th from 4 pm to 8 pm and on June 9th from 10 am to 12 noon at the Springfield Memorial Gardens Funeral Home & Cremation Center. A mass will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on June 9th at 1 pm. These services will allow us all to pay tribute to Gabriel's life and mourn his loss.
Gabriel had an infectious personality despite being shy and reserved. He had a great sense of humor and loved making people laugh with his goofiness. His kindness and caring nature left an enduring impression on everyone he knew. Gabriel was respectful of others' opinions while staying true to himself.
Gabriel's hobbies included watching documentaries, mysteries, scary movies, Harry Potter films, The Fast and Furious series, as well as Cake Boss episodes. He enjoyed building legos and collecting Hot Wheels. Through these interests, Gabriel developed an insatiable love for learning.
Although his life was brief, Gabriel's proudest accomplishments included being a member of the Jr. Beat Club and a Mid Fielder on his soccer team. These achievements are a testament to Gabriel's hard work, dedication, and love of music and sports.
Gabriel is survived by his parents, siblings, and grandparents: Orlando Barrera Martinez, Angelita Castanon, Serapio Sontay Pelico, and Maria Celsa Guox Herrera. Gabriel's passing has left an immense void in their lives as well as the lives of all those who knew him.
As we mourn the loss of this remarkable young man, we can find solace in the memories we shared with Gabriel. His life was a gift to all who knew him, and his spirit will live on forever. Gabriel may rest in peace knowing he had a positive impact on those around him.
