Dr. Wintfred Landon Smith, a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Tennessee at Martin, has peacefully passed away. Born in the Oakland Community of Robertson County, Dr. Smith's journey began on October 6th, 1938.
Devoted to academic excellence from a young age, he graduated from Springfield High School as part of the Class of 1956. His thirst for knowledge led him to become an esteemed alumnus of Tennessee Tech University. Dr. Smith's educational quest culminated at the University of North Dakota, where he earned his doctoral degree.
With a profound sense of duty and service, Dr. Smith enlisted in the United States Army on April 2nd, 1961, ultimately achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His commitment to his country was deeply ingrained in his character.
Throughout his illustrious career as an educator, Dr. Smith touched countless lives with his wisdom and passion for biology. His legacy extends beyond the classroom, impacting generations of students.
A man of honor and intellect, Dr. Smith's proudest accomplishments include serving as the President of the Lake County Historical Society. His dedication to preserving the history of Reelfoot Lake and its surrounding areas will be remembered for years to come.
Described as honorable, loving, and intelligent, Dr. Wintfred Landon Smith cherished his family above all else. He found joy in bringing loved ones together and creating lasting memories.
Dr. Smith is survived by his wife of 30 years Shirley Smith of Greenbrier, TN, four daughters, Valarie (Ron) Peery, Mountain View, AR., Susan (Tony) Beechman, Martin, TN. Carol (Jimmy) Welch, Memphis, TN., Kelly ( Mohamed) Soliman, Nashville, TN., and stepson Tyrell (Kara) Jackson Greenbrier, TN.. He had 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Landon Traywick and Fairbelle Carlisle Smith; his brother; Carl Gene Smith; and his sister Diane Smith Wilks.
