SHIELDS, Rev. Dr. Alan Vernon---July 28, 2009. Born July 30, 1924 in Paducah, Kentucky. Preceded in death by parents Walter C. and Florence Shields, sister Dorthea Shields, brother Clifford Shields, and wife, Martha Louise Flowers. Alan served in the U.S Army from 1943-1945 with the Northern Command in the European Theatre of WWII. In 1946, he married Martha Flowers, his wife of 54 years. He is a graduate of Centre College, received a Master of Divinity Degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, a Master of Science Degree in Sociology from the University of Louisville, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Vanderbilt University. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1949-1956. He served three churches during his 32 years of ministry: Shawnee Presbyterian Church and Iroquois Presbyterian Church in Louisville, KY and Hillwood Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN. Upon retirement he served as interim pastor for several Middle Tennessee Churches. He was a Past President of the Downtown Kiwanis Club where he was a member for over 30 years. Recently, he lived in Murray House on the Vanderbilt Campus with first year students in the Commons where he was affectionately known as the "Grandpa of the Commons". He is survived by his daughters Dr. Sharon Lee Shields Nashville, TN and Sarah Anne Michael Sedille LaFayette, TN and his son Raymond Alan Shields, three grandchildren, Brandon Alan James, Bennett Steven, and Mallory Ray Memphis, TN and his sister Florence McGuire Florida and many nieces and nephews. Alan was known as a beloved Pastor who loved the Lord and truly graced this world with his presence because of his witness for the Lord. Visitation with the family will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday afternoon August 2nd and Monday, August 3rd from 11 a.m. until service time in the Hill Chapel of Hillwood Presbyterian Church, 6220 Hickory Valley Road, Nashville, TN. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Rick Rocquie officiating. Internment in the Garden of Peace at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
